If you like watching movies, you have probably seen some movies dealing with environmental protection. You may have not noticed that environment protection was the theme as movie makers know how to send a message in a subtle way. People who care about the planet have come up with tons of different ways to remind us that we must take better care of the Earth and movies are certainly among some of the most creative and effective ones.

Avatar

The epic science fiction movie Avatar was released in 2009. We all rooted for ex-marine Jake Sully and his alien girlfriend Na’vi in their battle against the money-hungry Corporation that wants to destroy ancient forests, sacred places, and nations, and burn down everything on their path to more money. The spaceship battles and monsters, the love story, and the path of redemption of an ex-soldier are only side stories, while the most important story is that the planet Pandora represents the Earth and the effects of greedy corporations on our planet.

The movie reminds us that we must do something about those corporations that focus only on making more profit at the expense of nature. If we don’t stop them, we may become ‘sky people’ who come from a planet with no plants left.

The Matrix

Another legendary science fiction action movie with an environmental message is The Matrix from 1999. The story follows Neo as he fights against our AI overlords. Neo and the crew of the hovercraft Nebuchadnezzar travel through a virtual world and save people from AI agents. Wait! Where is the environmental message?

While you may have contemplated the idea that you might live in a virtual world one day, you may have not thought about the fact that human actions destroyed the world and burned down the sky in The Matrix, which is why people needed a new world. The message is that if we don’t start acting more responsibly towards the environment, we might need a new world and that one may not be as friendly as the world we are living in now. Instead of working on the development of technology so much, we should work on protecting the environment more.

WALL-E

When it comes to animated movies with environmental topics, the 2008 American movie WALL-E is the best example. This movie follows the adventures of a cute little cleaning robot on his way to the stars. The animation is done wonderfully and the story is quite captivating. However, if we look a little deeper, we see that the movie shows the Earth dead, ruined, and covered with garbage, which is a powerful warning that we must think about our actions and their effects on the planet.

What these movies tell us is that we must do our best not only to save our planet but also to share the message that our planet is in danger. If we don’t act now, tomorrow might be too late.
